Artist Profile

Nicola May is a queer British artist working primarily with textiles. Using their identity as the basis of their work, they explore themes of sexuality, gender, femininity and social issues. From rug hooking to embroidery, their work uses tapestry processes mixed with semi-sculptural elements to create conversational pieces of work. They use a variety of materials and processes in each project determined by the subject matter that ultimately conveys strong social messages in regards to social change. Their current work is focusing on the issue of fatphobia within out society and exploring glorifying these marginalised bodies.
